What does breast milk smell like?

When you take a whiff of fresh breast milk, it usually doesn't really have a super strong smell, but it does have a unique and easy-to-recognize scent that's sweet in its own way.

It's not overwhelmingly strong, but you could say it's somewhat nutty with hints of vanilla. It's kind of like cow's milk, but with a more sweetness added to the mix.

So, here's the scoop: the smell of breast milk isn't the exact same for everyone. It changes from one person to another and can shift based on a bunch of things, like what you eat and how well you’re hydrated.

Breast milk smell can change according to:

Your diet:

What you eat can actually make your breast milk smell like the food you've had recently, especially if it's something with a strong smell, like garlic, onions, or spicy stuff. Yep, your milk can get a little flavorful twist from your meals! 😄🌶️

Your hydration level:

When you're not drinking enough water and you're feeling a bit dehydrated, your breast milk might have a stronger smell. It's like your milk gets a bit more concentrated when you're not keeping yourself well-hydrated.

PRO-TIP: Breast milk should not smell foul or rancid. If it does, it may have spoiled.

NOTE: Frozen breast milk may smell soapy, metallic or even a little sour when thawed. If your previously frozen breast milk smells strange, it could be due to an enzyme called lipase. Lipase breaks down fat in milk and can make it smell soapy, metallic, or even slightly sour after being stored. Some mother’s breast milk have especially high lipase levels.

Some babies may not like this taste, but it's completely safe for them and there are ways to counteract it.
