Are Breastfeeding Classes Helpful?
Why a Prenatal Breastfeeding Class Is Essential
Andrea Tran RN, BSN, MA, IBCLC
As a lactation consultant, I believe that taking a breastfeeding class is one of the most important things a mom can do to prepare for breastfeeding.
Expectant moms do MANY things to get ready for breastfeeding.
They buy nursing bras.
They call their insurance to ask about getting a breast pump.
They research what breastfeeding pillow to get.
However, many moms neglect to do one of the MOST important things to prepare to breastfeed...
They don’t take a prenatal breastfeeding class.
Taking a breastfeeding class when pregnant will put your mind at ease. You’ll know what to expect.
Breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months and continuing to breastfeed through at least the first year is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Breastfeeding for the recommended length of time increases the likelihood that a baby will enjoy all those incredible benefits of breastfeeding.

I worked with a mama recently who was struggling with breastfeeding. She had not taken a class. She didn’t think it was important to do so because her midwife had not mentioned it.
I’m here to tell you that it can make a HUGE difference in how breastfeeding goes for you!
I say this not only from my own observations.
what you will learn at a breastfeeding class:
How to position and latch your baby.
What to expect from your baby’s feeding in the early days.
Signs that your baby is getting enough to eat from breastfeeding.
How to know when your milk is coming in
The most common breastfeeding problems.
Solutions to the most common problems
Pumping information
How to have a good milk supply.
Breastfeeding Class Options
The good news is that there are MANY options for prenatal breastfeeding classes!
Hospitals or Birthing Center
Private Classes
Some people like to be able to ask questions and get an immediate answer. They will get that from a class taught in-person.
Many women today are very busy. They may find it challenging to fit an in-person class into their schedule. Fortunately, they now have the option to take a course online. This allows them to take the class all at once or watch different sections of the class whenever they have the time.
Wherever you take your class, it should be taught by a certified lactation consultant or lactation educator.
When Should I Take A Breastfeeding Class?
I recommend completing the class by the 36th week of pregnancy. If your baby arrives early, you will be ready!
